Joon Yong Moon, son of President Moon Jae-in, who has quietly participated in group exhibitions over the years, has opened his first solo exhibition in eight years. News of the exhibition caused the Keumsan Gallery website to exceed its daily traffic limit, making it inaccessible on the morning of the 19th.

After his first solo exhibition at Gallery Godo in 2012, Moon is now presenting a new solo exhibition titled “Beyond the Gaze, Somewhere Between” at Keumsan Gallery until the 23rd. The exhibition features five new media art pieces, including “Inside” and “Outside.”

In this exhibition, Moon showcases his innovative “Augmented Shadow” technique. This device uses sensors to detect the position and angle of lights, captures the real shadow’s position and angle, and projects computer-generated virtual shadows onto the real shadows to create an augmented reality (AR) experience.

Keumsan Gallery, managed by Hwang Dalseung, a childhood friend of President Moon and CEO, has supported and managed various exhibitions of Moon’s work. The gallery explained, “This exhibition is a chance to revisit the augmented reality work that received a warm response at the Paradise Art Lab in October. It highlights the artist’s experimental spirit in exploring unique visual language through media work utilizing various technologies.”

As a media artist and computer programmer, Joon Yong Moon has exhibited at numerous international exhibitions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Microwave, Onedotzero, FILE, Cinekid, and Scopitone. He has also showcased his work at national and public museums, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Seoul Museum of Art, the Gwangju Design Biennale, and the Kumho Museum of Art. Moon has been selected for residencies at the Incheon Art Platform, the Asia Culture Center, and the Seoul Museum of Art’s support program for emerging artists, and his work is featured in the art creation textbook published by Hainaim Publishing.
